We recently sat down with David Zarin, President of Zarin Fabrics, one of the largest decorative fabric retailers in the United States. For 90 years, Zarin Fabrics has supplied designers, hospitality groups, commercial clients, and homeowners with high-quality textiles, custom upholstery, drapery, and fabrication services.

Love All: In both fashion and interiors, people are drawn to timeless design. What makes something feel timeless rather than dated?
David Zarin: Usually, it comes down to proportion, quality, and restraint. Trends can be fun, but if every element of a room is tied to one moment, it can age very quickly. A beautiful linen, wool, velvet, or classic pattern can work across generations because the material itself has character. We encourage clients to invest in the pieces they’ll live with for years and use trends more selectively.
Love All: Performance is a major consideration in sportswear. Has performance become equally important in decorative fabrics?
Zarin: Absolutely. People expect much more from fabrics today. They want something that looks sophisticated but can also handle children, pets, entertaining, sunlight, and regular use. That has driven enormous improvements in performance textiles. You no longer have to automatically choose between something beautiful and something practical.
Love All: How do you evaluate whether a fabric is right for the way someone actually lives?
Zarin: We ask questions. Where is it going? How often will it be used? Is it a sofa everyone sits on, drapery in a sunny room, or a decorative chair that gets occasional use? The same fabric can be perfect in one application and completely wrong in another. Understanding the lifestyle comes before making the recommendation.
Love All: Comfort is central to apparel. How important is the physical feel of a textile in interior design?
Zarin: Extremely important. People often begin by looking at color and pattern, but once you live with something, texture becomes just as important. A sofa might look fantastic, but if nobody wants to sit on it, the design failed. Fabrics are tactile products. How something feels against your skin, how it drapes, and how it softens a room all contribute to the experience.
Love All: Love All draws inspiration from vintage sportswear but updates it for modern use. Do you see a similar cycle in interiors?
Zarin: All the time. Design constantly revisits the past. We see renewed interest in traditional patterns, trims, velvets, stripes, and other elements that have existed for generations. What changes is how people use them. A traditional textile paired with a very contemporary piece of furniture can suddenly feel completely fresh. The most interesting rooms usually mix periods rather than trying to reproduce one era exactly.
Love All: What advice would you give someone trying to create a space that feels stylish now but won’t need to be completely redone in five years?
Zarin: Start with quality and choose major pieces based on what you genuinely love rather than what you’re seeing everywhere at that moment. Good fabrics, good furniture, and good workmanship give you a foundation that lasts. You can always change pillows, accessories, or smaller elements as your taste evolves.
Love All: What’s next for Zarin Fabrics?
Zarin: We’re continuing to help clients across the country combine beautiful design with fabrics that work for real life. People increasingly want homes that feel polished but not precious. That balance between style, comfort, and performance has always been important to us, and I think it’s only becoming more relevant.
